Die Revolution 1918/19 brachte mit der Weimarer Republik eine demokratisch verfasste deutsche Republik hervor, die allerdings dauerhaft politisch nicht stabil war, sondern 1933 in die nationalsozialistische Diktatur überging. Die damit verbundene Entfesselung des Zweiten Weltkriegs sowie die systematische Verfolgung und Vernichtung der Juden bilden bis heute den Tiefpunkt der deutschen Geschichte werden. Es entstand 1949 die Bundesrepublik Deutschland und die die Deutsche Demokratische Republik (DDR). Nach der friedlichen Revolution in der DDR, die 1989 das Ende der SED-Diktatur herbeiführte, kam es am 3. Oktober 1990 zur Wiedervereinigung.
