Sein bürgerlicher Name war Hans Bötticher. Nach langen Jahren auf See bei der Handels- und Kriegsmarine nannte er sich ab 1919 Ringelnatz - nach dem seemännischen Namen für das glückbringende Seepferdchen. Zwischen 1920 und 1933 war er in deutschen Kabaretts auf Tournee, um seine Gedichte vorzutragen - dann erhielt er Auftrittsverbot. Verarmt starb er 1934 an einer Lungenkrankheit. Seine Verse aber sind unsterblich.
