Hans Paasche begann als Marineoffizier und war später bei der Schutztruppe in Deutsch-Ostafrika. An Malaria erkrankt kehrte er zurück nach Deutschland, seine Hochzeitsreise verbrachte er wieder am Victoriasee, seine Frau war die erste Europäerin an den Quellen des Nils. Danach entfernte er sich immer weiter vom Establishment, warb für Frauenrecht und Pazifismus, unterstützte den Tierschutz und war einer der Wortführer der Jugendbewegung auf dem Hohen Meißner 1913.
