Sein Lebensziel war die Entdeckung der Nord-West-Passage nördlich des Nordamerikanischen Festlandes, der Verbindung von Atlantik und Pazifik. Nach zwei Arktisexpeditionen war Franklin kurzzeitig Gouverneur in Australien, bevor er auf der dritten Forschungsreise einen Schlaganfall erlitt und mit seiner Mannschaft im ewigen Eis starb.
