Ihre Fahrt auf plumpen, überladenen Hausbooten, den Ulmer Schachteln, war ein lebensgefährliches Abenteuer, doch Adelsherren in der neuen Heimat lockten mit reichlich Acker- und Weideland und eigenem Haus und Hof. So begann eine staatlich gelenkte Migration, die bis heute Spuren hinterlässt: Die Donauschwaben haben in Ungarn, Rumänien und Serbien eigenständige Kulturen entwickelt. Ihr Erbe droht zwar seit Flucht und Vertreibung auszusterben, doch ihre Nachkommen sind nach wie vor Brückenbauer zwischen Ost und West.
