Die Polemik entstand infolge einer Schrift Sir William Temples über jenes Thema, auf die W. Wotton antwortete, während Dr. Bentley für diese Antwort einen Appendix schrieb, indem er das Ansehn des Aesop und des Phalaris als Autoren zu vernichten suchte, die Sir William Temple in genannter Schrift aufs höchste gepriesen hatte.
