„Die Bücherschlacht“ ist eine Erzählung von Jonathan Swift: Wie die folgende Abhandlung unfraglich von demselben Verfasser ist, so scheint sie auch ungefähr um dieselbe Zeit geschrieben worden zu sein wie die vorhergehende; ich meine, im Jahre 1697, als der berühmte Streit über die alte und die moderne Gelehrsamkeit im Schwange war. Die Polemik entstand infolge einer Schrift Sir William Temples über jenes Thema, auf die W. Wotton antwortete, während Dr. Bentley für diese Antwort einen Appendix schrieb, indem er das Ansehn des Aesop und des Phalaris als Autoren zu vernichten suchte, die Sir William Temple in genannter Schrift aufs höchste gepriesen hatte.
