The Diary of Anne Frank Is 'A Monument to The Human Spirit'

One of the most famous accounts of living under the Nazi regime comes from the diary of a 13-year-old Jewish girl, Anne Frank. Edited by her father Otto H. Frank and German novelist Mirjam Pressler, this is a true story to be rediscovered by each new generation.

12th July 1944:

'It's difficult in times like these: ideals, dreams and cherished hopes rise within us, only to be crushed by grim reality. It's a wonder I haven't abandoned all my ideals, they seem so absurd and impractical. Yet I cling to them because I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart.'

In the summer of 1942, fleeing the horrors of the Nazi occupation, Anne Frank and her family were forced into hiding in the back of an Amsterdam warehouse.

Aged 13, Anne kept a diary of her time in the secret annexe. She movingly revealed how the eight people living under these extraordinary conditions coped with hunger, the daily threat of discovery and death and isolation from the outside world.

A thought-provoking record of tension and struggle, adolescence and confinement, anger and heartbreak, the diary of Anne Frank is a testament to the atrocities of the past and a promise they will never be forgotten.

Editorial reviews

In celebration of its 70th Anniversary, this is the complete and unabridged audiobook of Diary of a Young Girl, the memoir written by Anne Frank and narrated beautifully by English actress Helena Bonham Carter. The tragic early teenage years of Anne’s life that she documented in her diary are as powerful now as it was when it was first discovered and published in the years after World War II. Audible listeners will revisit or discover Anne’s intimate account of survival and family. A heartbreaking memoir from one young witness to a senseless and terrible war.

Critic Reviews

"A modern classic . . . Anne's diary tells a story that is true, memorable, important and strongly personalized . . . compelling reading." (The Times)

"Anne Frank’s diary is one of the greatest books of the century … As she brings herself and her circumstances into such buzzing, engaged life on the page, she triumphs over her history." (Guardian)

"Still rings down the decades as the most moving testament to the persecution of innocence." ( Daily Mail)

An easy book to listen too because it was engaging and very well read. I feel like I understand our world history so much more because this book not only taught me history but really inspired to research more on my own as well. Poor Anne. thanku for your diary. How horrible the human race truly is.

Life Changer - no matter how old you are

Best book I ever read. Anne Frank was a genius, I believe children across the globe should read this by the age of 15. Simply marvellous.

Incredible

What a gorgeous mind. I hope Anne is proud of her work and the fact that so many people love her writing. I think a younger sounding narrator would make the audio book sound like a friend chatting to you.

Maybe a younger voice would be more immersive

i really enjoyed it, however it was hard to keep track of all the characters because of the foreign names. besides that really good something you can enjoy over and over.

I cannot believe Anne was a young teenager when she wrote this, so mature for her age.
It's sad she didn't survive because she would of been one of the best writers this world my have seen.

So awesome enjoyed it

I had never read this book so it was a delight to hear it narrated so well.

Beautifully read

This book brings home the scale of the loss that was suffered in ww2. It was so tragic and unnecessary that ordinary human beings like Anne Frank and all the other inhabitants of the annex had to be murdered. I got attached to the characters and especially Anne and was able to relate to her experiences, thoughts and outlook on life. I don’t think I can read this book again knowing what happened to them all in the end. I can now understand how awful WW2 was

Beautiful but with a tragic ending

What an amazing story, I could easily listen to again and again.
For such a young girl she was a very deep thinker.
The narration was by far the best I’ve heard
Highly recommend!!

But I suppose that was the point. This was a time before touch screens. So poor Anne got so bored. This book made me realise how fortunate I am to be born in modern times.

The boredom.
