Buda brindó innumerables enseñanzas a lo largo sus años de predicación. Estas tomaban la forma de sentencias breves (sutras) que dirigía a sus discípulos a fin de guiarlos en el Sendero. Estas enseñanzas fueron cuidadosamente retenidas en la memoria y escritas por sus discípulos. Después del ingreso de Buda en el Nirvana, fueron compiladas por los monjes más antiguos de la Orden a fin de que el mensaje se pudiese conservar y transmitir a las nuevas generaciones. De esas enseñanzas fueron seleccionadas 423 sentencias pronunciadas por Buda en unas 300 ocasiones. Luego, ordenadas y divididas en 26 capítulos. Así es como ha tomado forma el sagrado Dhammapada que ha llegado hasta nuestros días.
