Deutschland, 1927. Trotz vieler Warnungen hat Anna den so charmanten wie verwegenen Kapitän Brandis geheiratet. Als er von einer langen Seefahrt nach Kiel zurückkehrt, wird er noch im Hafen verhaftet. Angeblich hat Brandis seinen Bootsmann erstochen. Er bleibt zwar auf freiem Fuß, darf aber bis zum Prozess kein Schiff mehr führen. Anna weiß jedoch nicht, ob sie ihm noch trauen kann. Zudem verhärten sich die Fronten im Land immer mehr. Sozialer Unruhen drohen. Kommunisten kämpfen gegen Nationalsozialisten. Und es scheint immer mehr, als wäre Brandis das Opfer einer Intrige.
