Selbst Freunden der klassischen Kriminalerzählung ist nicht immer bekannt, dass Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) mit Auguste Dupin und seinem ihn stets begleitenden Freund und Bewunderer schon lange vor Conan Doyle ein geniales 'Spürnasenteam' erfunden hatte. Da Dupin Franzose ist, ermittelt er natürlich in Paris und nicht wie Sherlock Holmes in London. Beide genießen Respekt und ehrfürchtige Bewunderung der Polizei ihres Heimatlandes. Die Vorgehensweise von Dupin und Holmes scheint ähnlich, allerdings nur auf den ersten Blick. Holmes sieht, interpretiert und kommt durch verblüffende Schlussfolgerungen zur Lösung. Dupin dagegen ist der geniale Analytiker. Er zerlegt alle ihm zur Verfügung stehenden Informationen konsequent in kleine Einzelteile, analysiert sie, baut sie wieder zusammen und zieht dann erst seine Schlüsse. 'Deduktion' nennt Dupins Weggefährte dieses Verfahren, das die ihn bewundernde Pariser Polizei mangels besserer Erkenntnis für Intuition hält.
