 Vid stranden i Whitstable lyckas endast de mest hängiva simma eftersom havet bara är djupt nog vid högvatten. Så när Deb, i sin slitna bikini och med solglasögonen på, titt som tätt stöter ihop med Maisie, med våtdräkt, simglasögon och simskor, utvecklas en oväntad vänskap baserad på deras kärlek till simningen, och att de båda två är nyskilda.

Snart får de sällskap av fler, var och en med egen kris att hantera: Ann, bossig och kontrollerande med en äldre mamma som kräver vård; Julie med tre barn under fem år; och den femtonåriga Chloe, som också hittar sitt lugn i havet. Den tysta och nervösa Bill anses däremot inledningsvis vara en fluktare, men välkomnas snart i simsällskapet även han.

När medlemmarna i Whitstables allmänna simsällskap får reda på att stranden och den gamla charmiga strandpromenaden ska göras om till ett stort, modernt fritidsområde får deras träffar plötsligt en ny mening.
