It's hard to give peace a chance when the other side regards conquest as the only option and a sneak attack as the best means to that end. That's why the Kingdom of Manticore needs allies against the Republic of Haven, and the planet Grayson is strategically situated to make a very good ally indeed. But Her Majesty’s Foreign Office overlooked a “minor cultural difference” when they chose Honor Harrington to carry the flag: women on the planet of Grayson are without rank or rights and Honor’s mere presence is an intolerable affront to every male on the planet.

Publisher's Summary
In the fourth and final book in speculative-fiction master Christopher G. Nuttall's Angel in the Whirlwind series, an epic battle pits the survival of hope against the locus of destruction.
As the Commonwealth produces more starships and increases recruits, victory begins to slip from Theocratic control. This can only make the Theocracy more desperate to win...and more dangerous to fight.
After a mission to liberate an occupied planet ends in nuclear devastation, Kat Falcone - now a commodore in command of HMS Queen Elizabeth - sees firsthand just how far the enemy will go. Suddenly dealing with the war effort and a humanitarian crisis, many in the Commonwealth want a truce. Kat wants something else: to crush the Theocracy outright - and quickly.
Kat devises Operation Hammer, an all-out assault on the enemy home planet, Ahura Mazda. It is a bold and risky plan, but the enemy has revealed there can be no middle ground. Can Kat break the galactic stalemate and deal a death blow to the Theocracy? As two empires prepare to fight the largest space battle in history, Kat must trust her instincts to save her people and avoid oblivion.

A Good Space Opera
This is book four in the Angel in the Whirlwind Series. It is best to read the series in order. Our protagonist is Kat Falcone. She is now a Commodore in command of the HMS Queen Elizabeth. Kat devises Operation Hammer which is an all-out assault on Ahura Mazda, the Theocracy’s home world. The Commonwealth is determined to end the war after the Theocracy destroyed a world and all its inhabitances just because they were losing control of the planet to the Commonwealth.
The book is well written and the pace is fast. The story is non-stop action with some humor tossed in. The story has lots of space and ground battles. Nuttall builds on the key characters with each edition. In this story Kat loses a lot of people close to her when there was a strike against her family. I thought this was the last book in the series but the ending seems to be a set up for another book. The book is a fun read and a great get- away- from- it- all book.
The book is about thirteen hours long. Lauren Ezzo does a great job narrating the book. Ezzo is a voice over artist and audiobook narrator. She has narrated the entire series to date.

Strong and Powerful Series
If you could sum up Desperate Fire in three words, what would they be?
If I can imagine myself in the future I would be her. I know it is more than 3 words. However it is how I would sum it up.
What other book might you compare Desperate Fire to and why?
If i have to compare it would be the Silver Ship Series. I love how characters of a series show vulnerabilities and strength while fighting evil and being the heroes and heroines
Which character – as performed by Lauren Ezzo – was your favorite?
The main character how I believe military is regardless if it is fiction and non-fictions.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, I read series as the available books are there to read.
Any additional comments?
I recommend to read this series if you want the a strong and vulnerable character.

Satisfying conclusion to a solid series
Desperate Fire is Christopher G Nuttall's 4th and final installment in the Angel in the Whirlwind series. Although Nuttall leaves open the door for future adventures, DF decisively concludes the war with the Theocracy. After a devastating genocide on a conquered world by the Theocracy, Kat Falcone plans and eventually leads the space equivalent of D-Day taking the fight to the heart of the Theocracy. While the battle plans become worthless after contact with the enemy, Kat reacts and revises as needed to get the job done.
There are no new sci-fi elements, except perhaps for the use of anti-mater weapons of total destruction. Nuttall does not pull any punches by letting main characters avoid long term consequences. Lots of innocents and even some main characters are killed. In the end, justice is served, but the final bill is quite steep.
The narration is handled well with a good range of voices and varaible pacing aligned with the degree of actions going on.

A well produced audio book that suffers stoeywise
Enjoyed the production values of this audiobook which allowed me to continue to the end despite the less than compelling story and resolution. Hopefully further stories will follow which will help clear up the all the rushed over details that I missed in this final book of the arc.

There's more to be told.
This is the final book in the series, but there's more to this story. Too many continuing questions to be answered. Too many stories to be concluded. The book hints at a new Arc, but doesn't tell of the title of this arc. I shall search through my Kindle Unlimited subscription books to see if it is mentioned. This was a good series. You get the impression that, even though specific current world religious beliefs were not stated as the protagonists at the root of it (they are specifically mentioned in the past tense - so not current), you will draw your own conclusions as to which religious belief it is modelled upon. Rightly or Wrongly...

Disappointing end to the books.
I had hopes for the end of the series, but it left unanswered questions. Then, I find out online there seems to be mention of other future books set in the same universe that might answer said unanswered questions; I hate expecting to reach an end of a series with questions answered, only to find parts of the end dangling, it seems too much like a marketing gimmick. Plus, I found the comparison to Islam way too obvious, and insulting. I know it's happened throughout history... the Germans and Japanese after WW2, the USSR and other communist countries from the 1950's until the 1990's. Now Islam. However, to my mind it is lazy to fall back on the current bad guys. No thought needs to go into the characters, and so I never get to relate to them on a more personal level. The good points are it was an interesting idea, and there are far to few female lead characters out there, so it's always good to see some attempts made to correct that imbalance. The overall writing was good, not marred by the truly awful editing that can let a lot of good ideas down. Plus the narrator was okay. Not the best, but I've heard a lot worse. Overall it left me feeling, 'meh'. So even if future books do answer questions like who had been in charge of the behind the scenes Government meddling, I'm not interested enough to find out whodunnit. Such a shame, because after the first book I did care enough to know.
