Im "Kronprinz", einem Hotel in Halle, wird einem wohlhabenden Gast ein roter Rubin gestohlen. Für die Polizei vor Ort scheint der Fall klar. Ein Etagenkellner soll es gewesen sein, der während der Frühstückszeit Gelegenheit hatte, den Diamanten aus der Schatulle im Zimmer zu stehlen. Als der Diebstahl nur wenige Minuten später entdeckt wurde, sprang der Kellner kurzerhand aus dem Fenster und flüchtete auf einem Heuwagen. Als Inspektor Wolter daraufhin sämtliche Hotelgäste einer Befragung unterzieht, kommt er zuletzt an einen Norweger Namens Henrik Sigerson alias Sherlock Holmes. "Sie lassen sich vom Offensichtlichen blenden", sagt dieser zu Inspektor Wolter. Und Holmes scheint wie immer recht zu behalten...
