Fährmanns Roman beweist, dass und wie aus Geschichte Geschichten gemacht werden können. Er legt einen Roman vor, der sich wesentlich von anderen dickbäuchig daherkommenden Historien unterscheidet. Behutsam, als entfernte er die Schutzschicht, demaskiert er eine Zeit, die in üblichen Erzählungen so oft als die "gute, alte" dargestellt wird. Er kommt ohne namhafte Helden aus, berichtet von den Namenlosen, auf deren Rücken Geschichte ausgetragen wurde und wird.
