Der Kunststudent Friedrich Metz besucht in der Residenzstadt die ausgestellten Juwelen im Schloss. Kurz vor Ende der Besuchszeit fällt ihm im grünen Gewölbe ein grüner Dunst in der Ecke neben den verschlossenen Vitrinen auf. Doch Metz beachtet dies nicht weiter und macht sich auf den Weg nach draußen. Dort stößt er mit einem anderen Besucher, einem Norweger, namens Sigerson, zusammen. Dieser geleitet den Studenten an die frische Luft, als auch schon kurz darauf die Polizei auf die beiden Männer zukommt. Ein Wachmann wurde im Schloss tot aufgefunden. Erschlagen, wie es heißt. Und nur der junge Student soll dafür in Frage kommen. Welch ein Glück, dass es da noch diesen Sigerson gibt...
