Nach stürmischer Überfahrt auf der Ostsee verfasste der deutsche Komponist Richard Wagner (1813-1883) die Oper "Der fliegende Holländer", welche auf einer gleichnamigen Sage basiert.
Kapitän Daland wird vom Fliegenden Holländer mit seinem Gespensterschiff überrascht. Der Holländer wurde vom Teufel verflucht und muss seitdem auf dem Meer herumirren. Er bietet Daland Schätze an, wenn er dessen Tochter Senta treffen dürfe. Als der Holländer vor ihr steht, schwört sie ihm ewige Treue. Doch der Jäger Erik stellt Senta zur Rede und wirft ihr Untreue vor. Der Holländer flieht zunächst enttäuscht auf sein Schiff. Senta aber will ihm ihre Treue beweisen.
