Seit klar ist, dass vom Gewinn des kommenden Rennens seine gesamte Existenz abhängt, scheint sein Arbeitgeber Sir Robert Norbert den Verstand verloren zu haben. Das sonst so innige Verhältnis zu seiner Schwester hat sich schlagartig abgekühlt und er schleicht sich Nacht für Nacht zur gruseligen Gruft der nahegelegenen alten Kapelle. Als Mason dem Detektiv dann noch das Stück eines verkohlten menschlichen Knochens zeigt, welches er im Ofen der Kapelle gefunden hat, ist Holmes' Interesse an dem Fall vollends geweckt.
