Erzählt wird die Geschichte des Bankprokuristen Josef K., der an seinem 30. Geburtstag von einer mysteriösen Behörde der Prozeß gemacht werden soll. Vergeblich versucht er in der Folge herauszufinden, wessen er angeklagt wurde und wie er sich rechtfertigen könnte. Doch je mehr er seine Unschuld verteidigen will, desto tiefer gerät er in das grauenhafte Labyrinth einer surrealen Bürokratie mit undurchschaubaren Gesetzen, deren Sinn die "Sinnlosigkeit" ist. Von einer anonymen, für ihn unerreichbaren Gerichtsinstanz wird er schließlich in einem Prozess, von dem nicht nur die Öffentlichkeit, sondern auch er selbst ausgeschlossen bleibt, zum Tod verurteilt.
Nie erfährt er, worin seine "Schuld" besteht. Dennoch fügt er sich diesem Urteil...
