Für die Titelrolle in Egon Günthers "Lenz" wurde er mit dem Grimmepreis ausgezeichnet und 1995 bekam er den Fernsehpreis der Akademie für darstellende Künste. Seinen Durchbruch erlangte er als Titelheld der ARD-Serie "Der Fahnder" und ist seither aus vielen TV-Produktionen nicht mehr wegzudenken.
