In den USA gehört David Morell zu den erfolgreichsten Autoren von Spannungsliteratur. Mit "Rambo" hat er einen Helden geschaffen, der auch noch 40 Jahre nach seiner literarischen Geburt Kultstatus geniesst. Doch auch die Viktorianische Zeit hat es Morell angetan: Im London des Jahres 1854 trifft der Hörer auf den opiumsüchtigen Schriftsteller Thomas de Quincey, dessen Betrachtungen über Mord als schöne Kunst plötzlich grausame Wirklichkeit werden.
