Barrès verschmilzt in dieser, spätromantischem Schwermut und philosophischem Gleichmut die Waage haltenden, Erzählung die Zerstörung des Serapeums von Alexandria im Jahre 391 durch den christlichen Kaiser Theodosius I. mit dem Martyrium der neuplatonischen Philosophin Hypatia von Alexandrien 415 durch einen christlichen Mob.
