Der Geisterseher war zu Schillers Lebzeiten sein größter Publikumserfolg. 1787-1789 erschien er zunächst in der Zeitschrift "Thalia", später folgten noch drei Buchausgaben. Zum Erfolg des Romans trug ganz sicher die behandelten Topoi bei, Geisterbeschwörung, Spiritismus und Verschwörungstheorien. Themen die sich damals größter Beliebtheit erfreuten. Formal ist der Roman eine Mischung aus kunstvoller Prosa, Briefroman und längeren Dialogpassagen, die an Schillers Dramen erinnern. Den im Roman angekündigten zweiten Teil hat Schiller übrigens nie geschrieben.
