Zu jener Zeit weilte einmal Herzog Thassilo, der letzte Beherrscher des Bayemlandes, zu dem auch ein größerer Teil des gewesenen Noricums gehörte, in der von Bayern besiedelten Ortschaft Lorch. Gunther, der Sohn Thassilos, vergnügte sich mit seinen Jagdgefährten in der wildreichen Gegend des heutigen Kremsmünster mit der Jagd. Der Jüngling, von seinem treuen Jagdhund begleitet, stieß im Verlauf der Jagd auf einen gewaltigen Eber, den er mit Eifer durch den ausgedehnten, dunklen Wald verfolgte, wobei er sich von seinen Jagdgefährten verlor.
