Under 2. verdenskrig havde USA og Sovjet kæmpet sammen mod Tysklands diktator, Adolf Hitler. Men da krigen sluttede i 1945, blev de to supermagter hurtigt fjender. Fra 1945 til 1989 foregik der en krig mellem de to parter, man i dag kalder Den kolde krig.
