Primary narrator Ben Barnes depicts the villainous Darkling when he was known as Eryk, a young teen who hungered for companionship and stability. An evocative soundscape, incorporating everything from the clip-clopping of horses' hooves to the sounds of the night, further enhances this spellbinding audio."—AudioFile Magazine (Earphones Award Winner)

This was not just listening to words on a page, it was full of ambiance and immersion that brought everything together. What an interesting backstory for the mysterious Darkling. Plus, Ben Barnes speaks into your ear for an hour so it just can't get better.

Astonished

a son who can so clearly see the life his mother wants for them both, as well as their people. At what cost to their own lives that wanted life was worth she seems to have not been as clear about. ✨ To be able to build a character in such a short prequel. Not just that of the darkling (Alexander) himself but also his mother's.
💯 The end, left me wishing I could continue along with them on their seemingly neverending journey to a home that's never theirs.

If I realised this book was so short I wouldn't have spent $14 on it.
