Ooit vroegen drie zusjes tijdens een boottocht om een verhaal. De verteller schreef het op voor Alice, de jongste zus. In november 1865 publiceerde hij het alsAlice in Wonderlanden in 1871 verscheen een zo mogelijk nog 'vreemderder' vervolg. Alice' avonturen zijn hoogtepunten in de fantastische literatuur.

Na talloze Nederlandstalige edities zag Nicolaas Matsiers nieuwe Alice-vertaling in 1989 het licht bij Boekerij-imprint Van Goor, met fraaie kleurenillustraties van Anthony Browne. In 1994 volgde een omnibus, verlucht door John Tenniel, dé Alice-illustrator.

In dit jubileumjaar brengt Boekerij opnieuw de Matsier-vertaling in een omnibus, met tekeningen van de enige die in Engeland als Tenniels gelijke geldt: Mervyn Peake.
