Huvudpersonen, Richard Hannay, dras motvilligt in i en kedja av händelser där han hetsas fram över det skottska höglandet jagad av skurkar och poliser. Boken har filmats otaliga gånger, men bäst är nog fortfarande Alfred Hichcocks version från 1935.
