Huvudpersonen, Richard Hannay, dras motvilligt in i en kedja av händelser där han hetsas fram över det skottska höglandet jagad av skurkar och poliser. Boken har filmats otaliga gånger, men bäst är nog fortfarande Alfred Hichcocks version från 1935. John Buchan (1875 1940) var en engelsk författare och politiker som skrev en radd historier om sin hjälte Richard Hannay, men den om De 39 stegen är den enda som överlevt och även haft framgång i Sverige. ..
