Story
It was easy for Elizabeth. She married the man she loved, bore him two children and made a home for him which was the envy of their friends. It was harder for Ruth. She married Elizabeth’s son and then found that, somehow, she could never quite measure up. Isolation, deceit and betrayal fill the gaps between the two individual women and between their different worlds. In this complex thriller, Philippa Gregory deploys all her insight into what women want and what women fear, as Ruth confronts the shifting borders of her own sanity.

Beyond Painful

Publisher's Summary
The new historical novel from Philippa Gregory, the Number One bestselling author of Tidelands and Dark Tides.
The spellbinding Fairmile series continues as the fiercely independent Alinor and her family find themselves entangled in palace intrigue, political upheaval, and life-changing secrets in seventeenth-century England.
It is 1685, England is on the brink of a renewed civil war against the Stuart kings and many families are bitterly divided. Ned Ferryman cannot persuade his sister Alinor that he is right to return from America with his Pokanoket servant Rowan to join the rebel army. Instead, Alinor has been coaxed by the manipulative Livia to save the queen from the coming siege. The rewards are life-changing: the family could return to their beloved Tidelands, and Alinor could rule where she was once lower than a servant.
Alinor’s son, Rob, is determined to stay clear of the war, but when he and his nephew set out to free Ned from execution for treason and Rowan from a convict deportation to Barbados, they find themselves enmeshed in the creation of an imposter Prince of Wales—a surrogate baby to the queen.
From the last battle in the desolate Somerset Levels to the hidden caves on the slave island of Barbados, this third volume of an epic story follows a family from one end of the empire to another, to find a new dawn in a world which is opening up before them with greater rewards and dangers than ever before.

Very well done. The best yet.
I had enjoyed the first two in this series, but found this book, informative and entertaining. Phillipa Gregory has outdone herself. I really enjoyed the connections between all of the familiar characters. I felt that there was comical element to Olivia the villain. As always the historical aspect is fascinating and will lead me to further reading and research. Well done to the narrator for a very entertaining performance. I will be highly recommending this book to others.

loved the whole series
There are some extremely unlikeable characters and a need to suspend disbelief, but I loved all three books in this series.
The history, human frailty and compassion were beautifully portrayed.
I recommend this series to anyone who wants to immerse themselves in a story.

Disappointed
Hard to follow in places and no central plot. Too many characters. And worst, I can’t imagine how the clever Reike family would have allowed the evil Livia back in.
