About this listen

When Fergus Galloway takes on a research trip to a tiny mining town in the far Western Australian outback, he’s as far from Sydney as he can get.

Which is entirely the point.

He arrives in Pannalego totally unprepared for the baking heat, unprepared for the people who call it home, unprepared for the craziness and the laughs. And absolutely unprepared for the man he meets there who steals his heart.

Davo is a mining man, as rugged as he is gorgeous. Loves his found family, loves where he lives, and loves his life. He also loves the feel of soft fabric on his skin.

What was supposed to be a short field trip changes Fergus’s life. Going to a place many call uninhabitable might turn out to be the only place he wants to live.

Words can’t describe how much I enjoyed this beautiful love story. Wonderful descriptions of life in remote mining regions and the harshness of the weather and the strength of the people who live in them. All wound around the story of Davo and Fergus. Solid gold.

A great little standalone story about being your true self and finding beauty in the small things. Very picturesque and descriptive. Narration was great.

Great characters

This is a super sweet and easy read, full of wonderful characters and a outstanding setting.
Lots of fun elements too with a swearing bird and small town traditions, this read will put a huge smile on your face from beginning to end.
Glen Lloyd delivers a masterful performance in the audio version - swearing bird and all!

It is easy to see why this is a favourite among her fans. It is perfectly positioned in Australian culture and quirk. The characters are brilliant. I appreciate Davos's confidence and self-awareness. Fergus getting healed and finding his place in a community is something deeply relatable. Fergus is something highly unusual in romantic fiction: an anthropologist (specifically a social anthropologist). The chaotic community is brilliant. Hooker is so, so Austraian i can't. He is the world's mouthiest, funniest sulphur-crested cockatoo. Fergus babysitting him is one of the more amusing things. The nicknames made me laugh, I truly appreciate that everyone has a job, and all the full-timers have two. JD’s second job is reading books over the radio.

The plot is fairly simple a researcher looking for an escape from a relationship takes a job on the opposite edge of Australia and meets the least likely man. Chaos, hilarity and of course, feelings ensue. The larger plot plays with the concept of the transience of mining and community. And ethics. I appreciate it as a plot. But I do have an interest in anthropology. That wider plot is easily ignorable in favour of just enjoying Davo, Fergus and their dynamic. As this is an N.R. Walker novella it has some great lines both laugh out loud moments and romantic. The ending was unexpected but actually quite fitting. The novella is satisfying, which is all I need from this story. I really hope NR writes a bonus for this someday. I tf would be well deserved.

On the audiobook adaptation. This is the first explicit mm romance I've listened to. Given that there is what may or may not be considered a kink involved, it's a choice. But at least I knew what I was getting myself into. The purple silk skirt scene is a whole thing to listen to. Glen Lloyd is a good Australian narrator. I love his choice to use his natural voice for Fergus, though I think it could become an issue if it is something he does frequently. Davo's voice is a wonderful choice, it feels like an extra layer of dichotomy to add to the skirt, grease and engineering. Hooker made me laugh. All of the cast felt effective and perfect for the Pilbara.

This really makes me want to listen to more of N.R. Walker’s audiobooks, especially Lacuna. I love that book and I think Crow and Tancho deserve the audio treatment. I know Nick R. Russo is doing theirs, he is a fan fave and considered one of the best.

Satisfying and So Very Australian
