Story
One of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Pride and Prejudice, is vividly brought to life by Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike ( Gone Girl). In her bright and energetic performance of this British classic, she expertly captures Austen’s signature wit and tone. Her attention to detail, her literary background, and her performance in the 2005 feature film version of the novel provide the perfect foundation from which to convey the story of Elizabeth Bennet, her four sisters, and the inimitable Mr. Darcy.

Story
Hard Times is Dickens's most political novel. Set in the industrial north of England, in Coketown, he examines the lives of working people, who are taught by the capitalists Gradgrind and Bounderby to think only of the facts of life and not to indulge in imagination. Gradgrind’s own children have been so educated and as a result are dysfunctional and disconnected from their feelings. Only the travelling circus company of Sleary seems to offer any hope of humanity in Coketown.

In a remote corner of early Victorian England, where traditional practices remain untouched by time, Bathsheba Everdene stands out as a beacon of female independence and self-reliance. However, when confronted with three suitors, among them the dashing Sergeant Troy, she shows a reckless capriciousness that threatens the stability of the whole community. In this, perhaps Dickens' most profound and personal novel, we are invited to share in the sentimental education of Pip, the poor boy from the village forge who risks losing himself in snobbery and selfishness when he mysteriously inherits a fortune. The story moves from the bleak Kentish marshes of Pip's childhood to a thrilling climax that mingles tragedy and triumph.

Story
Dorothea Brooke is an ardent idealist who represses her vivacity and intelligence for the cold, theological pedant Casaubon. One man understands her true nature: the artist Will Ladislaw. But how can love triumph against her sense of duty and Casaubon’s mean spirit? Meanwhile, in the little world of Middlemarch, the broader world is mirrored: the world of politics, social change, and reforms, as well as betrayal, greed, blackmail, ambition, and disappointment.

Story

Story
Les Misérables is set in Paris after the French Revolution. In the sewers and backstreets, we encounter "the wolf-like tread of crime", and assassination for a few sous is all in a day's work. We weep with the unlucky and heart-broken Fantine, and we exult with the heroic revolutionaries of the barricades; but above all we thrill to the steadfast courage and nobility of soul of ex-convict Jean Valjean, always in danger from the relentless pursuit of the diabolical Inspector Javert.

Story
The Sound and the Fury is the tragedy of the Compson family, featuring some of the most memorable characters in literature: beautiful, rebellious Caddy; the manchild Benjy; haunted, neurotic Quentin; Jason, the brutal cynic; and Dilsey, their black servant. Their lives fragmented and harrowed by history and legacy, the character’s voices and actions mesh to create what is arguably Faulkner’s masterpiece and one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century.

Long overdue, well worth the time and attention
I great up thinking David Copperfield was just a TV magician. How wonderful this experience of listening to Martin Jarvis narrate this book masterful in every way. It took me in completely, although I nearly quit during the time of the horrible Merdstones.
Thank you, Mr Dickens, for taking the time to write down this story and for making it long and slow. I learned so much about the England of around the 1850s. I loved most of your characters, and I hated the ones that treated you badly. I'm inspired by who David Copperfield became, because of and despite his early life experiences.

A Classic
I did struggle at the beginning but the enjoyment grew with each chapter. I was surprised there were so many "laugh out loud" moments and I loved the characters. The narrator was particularly good and did "a fantastic Uriah Heep". These characters I have heard about and I have, in the past, attempted to read my grandfather's copy, which must be 100 years old but has incredibly small print on tissue thin paper and did not entice me to persevere!

A Narrator Like No Other
This is a great book, but the last half is not nearly as good as the first.
The narrator of the story is incredible, and makes the story even better than it is. If I was reading this, I wouldn’t have enjoyed it nearly as much.

Stunning performance of a complex rich tale
Martin Jarvis is quite brilliant in capturing this wonderful multilayered story based I think on Dickens’ life. He captures the wonderful qualities of all the characters Micawber and his wife, Peggarty, Dora and Agnes, little Emily, Betsy Trottwood and of course Trott himself. It’s funny, endearing, heart wrenching and much more. Quite simply a brilliant rendition of a classic.
