Over performed and immature

The male love interest was awful, the narrator spent their whole time whining in an overwrought tone. So so much telling not showing. In particular the apparent amazingness of the lead character. Ugh.

Underrated

Actually love this and expected less based on the reviews. The main character is a bit whiny yes but to be fair she does go through a lot and its not her fault either so I'd be complaining too haha. I thought the narrator did well. Not the best I've heard but a lot more variation in voices and better pacing than other audible books I've heard. I liked the world building, the politics and the character arc of the main character that is building. Its only book 1 so unless you're looking for a quick read and simple world I don't expect it to get super hectic yet. The author has basically set the scene and the direction of the series. I also love that the book doesn't entirely lean on smut and romance to make it interesting which is such a breath of fresh air. I recommend it for sure and can't wait for book 2!

Roman Empire meets High Fantasy

I was really excited to start this series, especially with all the great reviews it had received online, but I soon realised that the audio book format was not the best way to approach this book and most probably the whole series.

The storyline was quite complexed and challenging to follow, especially at the start when the author was setting up her high fantasy world. The excessive info dumping, made up language, ruling families and numerous kingdoms was difficult to navigate, especially without a world map or glossary to refer back to. I also had a few questions regarding the story line that left me perplexed. Why was Lyr only limited to two career paths, mage or soldier, as her only choices? Surely there should have been other options available to her, especially when the twist in the plot was revealed 🤷🏻‍♀️

The positives about this book was that it was very well written and author put in a lot of effort into creating this cutthroat, back stabbing society, that reminded me a lot of the tv mini series Rome (2005-2007), which I absolutely loved watching back then. I was constantly listening to find out what was going to happen next, especially between our three MCs, Lyr, Ryan and Tristan.

Will I continue with the next book? Hmmm… I haven’t decided yet, but if I do, I will definitely be changing the format I approach this series with again.

Quick review...

Love the way it is written! Super engaging, so much so that it wasnt until chapter 28 that I started wondering if anything was going to happen soon. Lots of interesting things but there didn't seem to be any 'wow' moments. I've never disliked the main character so much, she is entitled and whinges and stuck up, out of touch but I enjoyed that I didn't like her. She had faced challenges but I didn't really feel like the plot went anywhere. I like the world created and will read the 2nd book to see if something actually happens after all this set up.

over dramatic performance

petulant entitled characters whined and spitefully bitched and butchered constantly. Predictable, shallow, no real magic and just meh.
