About this listen

In this personal account, Lilia Tarawa exposes the shocking secrets of the cult, with its rigid rules and oppressive control of women. She describes her fear when her family questioned Gloriavale's beliefs and practices.

When her parents fled with their children, Lilia was forced to make a desperate choice: to stay or to leave. No matter what she chose, she would lose people she loved.

In the outside world, Lilia struggled. Would she be damned to hell for leaving? How would she learn to navigate this strange place called "the world"? And would she ever find out the truth about the criminal convictions against her grandfather?

It's such a shame that an interesting and insightful book was narrated with such a poor a attempt at a kiwi accent. An unnecessary distraction from Lilia's wonderful writing.

Worst imitation of a kiwi accent

Beautifully told story of Lilia's experience in Gloriavale and beyond. What an amazing and strong woman! I am so happy she showed not only the horrible oppressive side of the cult that media would often write in the headlines, but also wrote of the true care and love shown between some of the families in the community. Can't say I liked the accents of the reader though. It was rather distracting every time I'd resume listening.

Powerful and eye-opening

The accent was off putting, the attempt at a kiwi accent was good for some parts but absolutely cringe for many others.
At times the accent overshadowed the story.

Great story overall and was an interesting insight into Gloriavale.

Great book but didn't like the narrator

I have listened to this autobiography so many times since it became available on Audible and every time I am taken on a roller coaster of emotions. This book gives so much insight into a completely different way of lifec as well as someone else’s journey. Such an eye opening read and one I would recommend to anyone!
