Karin ist Polizistin und ermittelt in einem ungewöhnlichen Fall: Ein Irrer ermordete in einem Schwimmbad drei Kinder und entführte ein weiteres. Bei den Ermittlungen lernt sie ihren zukünftigen Mann Stefan kennen. Das Paar verbindet eine unglaubliche Lebensgeschichte und sie führen eine glückliche Ehe. Trotzdem lässt Karin der seltsame Fall des "Schwimmbad-Massakers" nicht los und von dem verschwunden Kind fehlt auch viele Jahre später jede Spur. Als Stefan eines Tages schwer erkrankt, erhält sie einen Hinweis über den Verbleib des entführten Kindes und es scheint, als wäre das Kind die einzige Lösung Stefan zu heilen und dem Tod auf ewig zu entgehen.
