Der junge Kaufmann Georg Bendemann schreibt einen Brief an seinen Petersburger Freund, worin er ihm seine Verlobung anzeigt. Als Georg mit dem Brief zu seinem Vater geht, kommt es zu einem Disput: Er habe den Freund verraten, das Geschäftsvermögen des Vaters vergeudet und das Andenken der verstorbenen Mutter geschändet. Der Vater erklärt ihm, dass er seit Jahren mit dem Freund in Verbindung stehe, und verurteilt Georg zum Tod durch Ertrinken.
Beeindruckend ist die Bandbreite der Ausdruckskraft von Ulrich Wildgruber. Dabei drängt sich der Schauspieler erfreulicherweise nicht in den Vordergrund, sondern lässt immer der meisterhaften Sprache Kafkas den Vorzug.
