Hofmannsthal beschreibt es in der Vorrede des Theaterstückes wie folgt: "Von diesem ist hier die das Ganze tragende Metapher entlehnt: Dass die Welt ein Schaugerüst aufbaut, worauf die Menschen in ihren von Gott ihnen zugeteilten Rollen das Spiel des Lebens aufführen".
Inhalt: Ein Bettler verliert seine Frau und seine Kinder. Als er einen Bauern um Arbeit bittet, soll er im Wald nicht nur Holz schlagen, sondern auch die notleidenden Holzsammler wegprügeln. Da erhebt er die Hacke gegen den Bauern. Durch diese Handlung wird der Bettler zum Revolutionär, später spielt er die Rolle des Weisen und dann jene des Christen. Nicht die soziale Gerechtigkeit ist dann das Anliegen des Bettlers sondern Gewaltlosigkeit und Veränderung des Bewusstseins.©2016 gemeinfrei (P)1949 hr
