Damit setzte sich die Gestalttherapie bewusst von der eher erinnerungsorientierten Psychoanalyse ab und war die erste Therapieform, die der Psychoanalyse Konkurrenz machte. Sie wurde von den Neurologen Fritz und Laura Perls begründet, die als Juden vor den Nazis flohen und nach dem Krieg in Amerika die Gestalttherapie als eine erlebnisorientierte Therapie entwickelten.

Durch bestimmte Übungen, wie das Schlüpfen in andere Rollen, versucht der Therapeut den Klienten in einen bewussten Kontakt mit sich selbst und seiner Umgebung zu bringen.
