Wer gelernt hat, gesund zu leben, der kann viele Krankheiten vermeiden, der kann das Schicksalhafte besiegen. Und so kommt es, dass "Schicksal" für die Medizin ein Fremdwort geworden ist, besteht ihre Aufgabe doch gerade darin, es mit allen zur Verfügung stehenden Mitteln zu bekämpfen. Diese Ausblendung hat allerdings ihren Preis: Ratlosigkeit stellt sich ein, wenn wir mit einer Krankheit, die wir nicht mehr in den Griff bekommen, oder mit dem Sterben konfrontiert werden.

Giovanni Maio, Professor für Medizinethik an der Universität Freiburg, plädiert für eine Reintegration des Schicksalsgedankens in der modernen Medizin.
