Bereits mit diesem Satz, dem ersten Satz der 1807 veröffentlichten Novelle, katapultiert Kleist den Leser in medias res. Das tragische Geschick des jungen Mannes Jeronimo, der verbotener Weise die schöne Adlige Josephe liebt, ist hier allerdings noch nicht auf seinem fatalen Höhepunkt angelangt. Und auch Josephe, die in diesem Moment hingerichtet werden soll, wird dank des Erdbebens noch einmal verschont. Die Naturkatastrophe kommt den Liebenden zur Hilfe und vereitelt ihren Tod. Doch dem jungen Paar bleibt nicht mehr viel Zeit...
