Dorians Gewissen wird dabei durch ein Porträt ersetzt, das seine Sünden stellvertretend durch fortschreitenden Verfall auf sich nimmt, während er selbst sich in völlig unveränderter Jugendfrische ungehemmt seiner Lasterhaftigkeit hingeben kann. Der dekadente Ästhetizismus des fin de siecle und die Überheblichkeit der sogenannten oberen Gesellschaft Englands werden ausführlich dargestellt. Wildes Kritik daran ist resignierend und selbstironisch.
