About this listen

A Warhammer 40,000 Audiobook

In the grim darkness of the far future, the galaxy burns as its disparate races fight for resources, territory, and divine purpose. The Imperium faces threats both alien and heretic, and the touch of the warp is ever a moment from seeping into reality, with deadly consequences. Survival is earned in blood.

LISTEN TO IT BECAUSE

It's a chance to see the 41st Millennium through the eyes of the lowly soldiers whose actions keep the nightmares of the galaxy at bay, including several from xenos races! Featuring tales from fan-favourite Black Library authors and writers new to the Warhammer 40,000 setting, these short stories are a great way to explore the galaxy from the comfort and safety of your armchair.

THE STORY

Darkness Eternal runs the gamut of the Warhammer 40,000 setting, featuring tales from Nate Crowley, Justin D Hill, Peter Fehervari, and many more. With a diverse range of characters from across dozens of factions, Darkness Eternal takes us into the worlds of the savage kroot, the ravenous tyranids, and the avaricious Leagues of Votann – and examines the Imperium of Man’s struggle for primacy against them all.

In One Million Years, the Kin of the Leagues of Votann surround a necron ship, and it is up to a lowly apprentice cryptek to rally the undying legions and fend off the assault.

Altar of Maws sees battling armies of waterborne t'au and Imperial forces on Phaedra unwittingly disturb a monstrous Chaos creature that has slumbered for centuries.

The Light of the Emperor follows Apothecary Biologis Vultis of the Ultramarines as he educates a pious, inflexible preacher on the value of science and knowledge while a tyranid swarm closes in.

The infamous Black Ships ferry imprisoned psykers to Terra from across the Imperium, to feed the astronomican. The Devouring Void explores what happens when one Black Ship drifts too close to the edge of a hive fleet's warp-shadow, finding itself stranded in realspace and under alien assault.

Own Worst Enemy features the legendary pilot Lucille von Shard facing off against an unusual and deadly foe on the Great Grass Plains. Behind the controls of the enemy craft is a rookie, and death seems to follow wherever he flies.

Arcady Pride is set in the immediate aftermath of Traitor Rock – Minka Lesk drinks with Blanchez and Yedrin in the ruins of the city they've finally conquered, telling somewhat sanitised stories of old Cadia.

When the t’au bring down an Imperial Navy Lightning Strike Fighter, Major Wulf Khan must venture deep behind enemy lines in Nightsider Imperialis. Will Khan rescue the pilot before they – and the secrets they carry – fall into xenos hands?

A Forbidden Meal stars a kroot shaper as he tries his best to guide the evolution of his kindred.

In Eradicant, a squad of Tempestus Scions is deployed on a covert mission to rescue the planetary governor of a planet fallen to Chaos.

The Convocation follows an Imperial Navy team who uncovers a genestealer infestation upon a bulk freighter – can they cleanse the alien taint?

A former ganger visits her home planet in Stealing Orpheon, and engages old contacts to carry out a daring heist and retrieve precious information.

Lessons of Rorphax features the Tome Keepers 5th Company as they are reforged after devastating losses at the hands of the orks.

Finally, Devilhunter stars Takka, who is part of an advanced, elite strike force formed by the t'au empire to track and eliminate tyranid vanguard organisms. To safeguard their sept, he and his crew will have to venture into deadly jungles in pursuit of unknown prey.

One Million Years, Alright, the voice for the Necrons felt a bit off they felt a bit close to writing humans. But when the kin started talking was fantastic both familiar and alien at the same time.

Alter of Maws, Peter Fehervari continues to be the best black library author, he makes the Tau so alien as well as the horror of the story. I cannot understate how good his writing is. The transformation sequence is fantastic, makes my skin crawl.

The Light of the Emperor, decent not much to say about it as not good or bad, did enjoy the contrast of the rational and fanatic sides of the imperium.

The Devouring Void, Good voice acting, just not memorable.

Own Worst Enemy, Good story, love the way it contrasts the newer faces whith the battle-scarred veterans, still good despite not reading any Lucille von Shard novels so far.

Arcady Pride, bad, just feels like a few characters going were the replacements for the characters you love, we're just like them but better don't you love us. Only thing that stands out as good is a description of the characters drinking Amisec.

Nightsider Imperialis, good, like the prominence that kroot are getting, almost every story that I've read with them in it make them feel like a threat.

A Forbidden Meal, fantastic, really good, the internal monolog of the kroot highlights how different they are from us, love how it shows how careful they need to be with what they consume lest they become an evolutionary dead end. I want to hear more from this author to see if it is just a once off case of hitting gold or reflective of their skills as an author.

Eradicant, good, loved the descriptions of the slavering Khorne cultits, made them something to fear despite being waided through.

The Convocation, good, enjoyed how the geenstealer was something to fear, this souds weird but at this point if was starting to feel like a women of 40k collection.

Stealing Orpheon, decent not the best, made me feel like it was a part of a larger story with characters that had been seen before but that I wasn't aware of. Continued that feeling of this being a women of 40k book,

Lessons of Rorphax, Good, I enjoyed how it wasn't written in the main black library style, did a fantastic job of conveying the feeling of the chapter as well, one of those stories that makes me understand why people buy space marines.

Devilhunter, very good, loved the inclusion of this story as it adds to a forbidden meal as well the overarching theme of geanstealer/tyranid invasions, I enjoyed the payoff for the consequences of kroot eating bad flesh as well as how it characterized the different alien races highlighting the differences in their psyche.

I think the main culprit of the feeling of being a woman of 40k book is Arcady Pride, having the main character feeling like a replacement for another character, all the other female characters are well written and feel like their own creations as well as making me want to read/listen to more stories about them. Arcady Pride just rubbed me the wrong way despite not being familiar with the characters that it feels like it is replacing it just comes through that strong. A bad story that makes others feel worse by opening them up for accusations that have no real foundation.

The voice acting is good for all stories.

Good collection of stories with one bad egg.
