Publisher's Summary

"Vampires don't exist. At least, not anymore...."

I celebrated when vampires were declared extinct.

Those beasts had preyed on humanity for millennia, committing senseless, brutal murders. Like the rest of my colleagues at the Occult Bureau, I looked forward to a world where we could all sleep at night - where constant cover-up jobs were no longer required to keep the public calm and unaware.

But the end of vampires wasn't the end of our problems. It was only the beginning.

Other blood-sucking creatures began to lurk in the night. As soon as I turned 21, I became a ground agent at the Bureau because I wanted - no, needed - to join the fight.

And then Dorian Clave burst into my life - turning everything I thought I knew into quicksand. Vampires like him were killers who devoured humanity's inner darkness until shadows danced beneath their skin. Yet there was more to him than that.

He showed me that light cannot exist without the dark, and that trying to fight this balance would have consequences our human minds couldn't even comprehend.

Because sometimes darkness needs to exist.

Twilight fans, welcome to a thrilling new world....

Um..it’s a different take on tween Vamp love story

Its still a Vamp/Human forbidden love story. Kinda predictable but does proffer a new unexpected creative plot. In this story humans and vampires are actually wholly independent species. The Vamps flee from their home realm and come to Earths to survive an apocalypse in theirs. Seems the very thing that caused all the trouble is of course humans.
The Vamps feed on blood, but only on the blood of bad, wicked evil humans who the Vamps seem to have an instinct for. They don’t feed on good folks because they taste like eating card board or saw dust, no flavor at all. Only the wicked are tasty.
This is a fun story with plots and twists to keep you guessing and interested to the end.
I hope book two doesn’t disappoint. I look forward to book two.

So glad I kept going!

I listen to audio books while I’m working on the office and usually don’t have any issues. After just finishing another Bella Forest book I was having trouble or following along with this one. I restarted it twice. On a road trip I restarted it again and am so glad I did. I love this book! I love the story and the characters and I think the reader did a really good job. I can’t wait to listen to the next book in the series!

I really tried to love this...

I desperately tried to finish this book but every moment when I turned it on I would turn it off shortly after. I quit reading this alltogether with about 3 hours until the end, I just couldn't make it no matter how hard I tried. The narrator is great, and gives a good performance.

The plot moves at a very slow pace, and it was reccommened to me as a romance book but not much romance happens other than the main character constantly swooning over a vampire and some playful banter. Overall very bland. Heavily plays on themes of post-apocolaptic future, and heavy military themes with fighting and guns (Not my cup of tea, and if I knew it was a military book I would't have bought). It was just ok overall.

Vampires

I really enjoyed this version of the vampire world, and the struggles on both sides present from a single point of view was excellent as well. I look forward to continuing the series and seeing how Lyria deals with the changes ahead. The narrative is good in my opinion.

Great story

I really enjoyed the story but agree with the other reviewers who also found the narrators Scottish accent rather jarring!

Worth a listen,these aren't sparkly vamps.

So good I am gutted that the next one isn't available yet.I listen to a lot of audiobooks,so many things matter to make it a good one.Story, narrator's voice, accents used etc and this one only falls down in the respect the narrator does a terrible Scots accent.Other than that perfect!

Great story. Terrible accents

When a fairly major character is Scottish, please use a narrator who can speak with a Scottish accent. Your audience isn’t all from the US. Some of us live in the UK and the awful Scottish accent detracted from an otherwise excellent audiobook. The rest of the performance was good but I can’t bring myself to give anymore than one star as the accent was painful to listen to.

Vampires but not as we know them

What a great spin on the normal vampire story. Engaging and exciting a great read. I can’t wait for the next chapter of Lyra and Dorians story.
