Publisher's Summary

Unwanted betrothals, assassination attempts, and a battle for the crown converge in Danielle L. Jensen's Dark Skies, a new series starter set in the universe of the YA fantasy Sarah J. Maas called "everything I look for in a fantasy novel".

A runaway with a hidden past....

Lydia is a scholar, but books are her downfall when she meddles in the plots of the most powerful man in the Celendor Empire. Her life in danger; she flees west to the far side of the Endless Seas and finds herself entangled in a foreign war where her burgeoning powers are sought by both sides.

A commander in disgrace....

Killian is Marked by the God of War, but his gifts fail him when the realm under the dominion of the Corrupter invades Mudamora. Disgraced, he swears his sword to the kingdom’s only hope: the crown princess. But the choice sees him caught up in a web of political intrigue that will put his oath - and his heart - to the test.

A kingdom under siege....

With Mudamora falling beneath the armies of the Corrupter, Lydia and Killian strike a bargain to save those they love most - but it is a bargain with unintended and disastrous consequences. Truths are revealed, birthrights claimed, and loyalties questioned - all while a menace deadlier and more far-reaching than they realize sweeps across the world.

Another solid offering from Jensen

I really love Jensen’s work- her plots are great, her writing is crisp yet evocative and she manages to build rich & fully formed worlds without information-dumping. Dark Skies sits squarely in this category & is a very solid 4 star offering.

However I have a couple of criticisms that are more annoyances that detracted from my enjoyment of the story (keeping in mind that I’m a sleepy-deprived-thus-cranky 36y/o woman with a 6 month old who’s currently teething).
1) This book and Dark Shores both feel like they should be Adult, rather than YA, Fantasy and as such the MCs would be better served/developed if they were in their mid to late 20s. The maturity of the situations that they find themselves in & their responses to those circumstances just feels unrealistic when I remember they’re between 17 & 19y/o.
2) In Dark Skies especially, although to a significantly lesser degree also in Dark Shores, there are absolutely moments at the start of the book where the FMC suffers from “too stupid to live” levels of, well, idiocy that REALLY irked me considering the former is supposed to be a super-intelligent-scholarly-type person & the later is a super-worldly-sailor-pirate-type. I get that some of it was necessary to move the plot along, but I honestly felt that the MMCs motivations/actions were far more realistic and heart-rending as well as better plot devices.

That said- cracking political intrigue, the highest of stakes for all involved, fantastically sinister enemies and really enjoyable banter between the MCs as well as with supporting cast- make for as absorbing a read as DS. Also the fact that the FMC does have a lot of moments of resourcefulness (doors, knives, hinges & splatting evil creatures) we’re REALLY enjoyable 💪🥰

This was even better than dark shores

Full disclosure. I haven’t actually finished. I have 1hr 45mins to go but I felt compelled to write my review now as I can categorically say I really loved this book.
Despite enjoying the first book in this series I have much stronger feelings about this one. Dark shores was okay but this story had me fully invested.
After finishing dark shores I was hesitant to read this book after learning it didn’t pick up from the somewhat cliffhanger ending of dark shores but rather follows the story of Lydia, the timeline concurrent to that of dark shores. To be frank, some of the reviews even put me off reading this given the final instalment is released tomorrow. Honestly, I am so glad I just dived into it. This book is fantastic. Action packed. Much faster pace than dark shores in my opinion. It has everything. Slow burn romance. Political intrigue. Heroine transformation from helpless girl to warrior woman.
If you enjoyed dark shores then do yourself a favour snd read this instalment. I promise you will be invested in Lydias journey.
