About this listen

He broke the chains. Then he broke the world….

A decade ago Darrow led a revolution, and laid the foundations for a new world. Now he’s an outlaw.

Cast out of the very Republic he founded, with half his fleet destroyed, he wages a rogue war on Mercury. Outnumbered and outgunned, is he still the hero who broke the chains? Or will he become the very evil he fought to destroy?

In his darkening shadow, a new hero rises.

Lysander au Lune, the displaced heir to the old empire, has returned to bridge the divide between the Golds of the Rim and Core. If united, their combined might may prove fatal to the fledgling Republic.

On Luna, the embattled Sovereign of the Republic, Virginia au Augustus, fights to preserve her precious demokracy and her exiled husband. But one may cost her the other, and her son is not yet returned.

Abducted by enemy agents, Pax au Augustus must trust in a Gray thief, Ephraim, for his salvation.

Far across the void, Lyria, a Red refugee accused of treason, makes a desperate bid for freedom with the help of two unlikely new allies.

Fear dims the hopes of the Rising, and as power is seized, lost, and reclaimed, the worlds spin on and on toward a new Dark Age.

And I do not say this lightly. I am writing this immediately after finishing Dark Age - Part 2 of 3, while it is still fresh in my mind, and it is quite frankly my favourite entry in the entire franchise.

The voice acting is exceptional across the board, delivering performances that are immersive, controlled, and emotionally precise. Paired with outstanding editing and a powerful musical score, the experience becomes fully cinematic. Every transition, beat, and pause feels intentional. Nothing is wasted. Together, the performances, sound design, and music form a masterclass in audio storytelling.

What truly sets this instalment apart is the depth of characterisation. Characters I already believed were fully realised are taken to an entirely new level. Their personalities, intelligence, and inner conflicts are explored with striking clarity. You do not just hear what they say - you understand how they think. Their psychology, growth, and humanity are revealed in ways that make every choice feel earned and consequential.

This care extends even to minor characters. The story makes you feel for them, fear for them, and invest emotionally in their outcomes, no matter how brief their presence. That level of emotional reach is rare.

There were multiple moments where I had to pause the audio, not out of overwhelm, but simply to sit with what I had just experienced. Fear, sadness, and a constant, simmering anxiety build throughout, pulling you deeper and making it impossible not to keep thinking about what comes next.

The ending is perfectly judged. It avoids a cheap cliffhanger and instead delivers a precise balance of satisfaction and tension - enough resolution to feel fulfilled, and enough unanswered weight to stay with you long after. In a few weeks, I know I will still be thinking about it.

My sincere compliments to the entire voice cast, the editors, the composers, and the director for delivering such a masterful production. And of course, profound respect to Pierce Brown - for the depth, complexity, intelligence, and humanity of the characters, and for the extraordinary world-building that makes this universe feel vast, layered, and relentlessly real. This is Graphic Audio at its absolute best: powerful, immersive, and unforgettable.
