De såkaldte fem forbandede år, som man i folkemunde kalder den tyske besættelse af Danmark fra d. 9. april 1940 til den 5. maj 1945, var en uhyre belastende periode for det danske politi. Den 19. september 1944 står som den mørkeste dato i politiets historie – den dag – da besættelsesmagten fjernede politiet over hele landet og sendte store dele af styrken til de tyske koncentrationslejre.
Det følgende giver sig ikke ud for at være den endelige og fuldstændige beskrivelse af politiets forhold under besættelsen, men vil kunne give læseren et indtryk af politiets problemer i den tid.
