About this listen

Ordered to hold an abandoned army post, John Dunbar found himself alone, beyond the edge of civilization. Thievery and survival soon forced him into the Indian camp, where he began a dangerous adventure that changed his life forever.

Set in 1863, the novel follows Lieutenant John Dunbar on a magical journey from the ravages of the Civil War to the far reaches of the imperiled American frontier, a frontier he naively wants to see "before it is gone".

Fantastic story, one that shows both the intent of the white settlers and Government, to take and use all the abundance the American frontier offered for financial gain and their own betterment.
The frontier folks (Squatters) were mostly used to poverty and scraping by, so the abundant resources spelt riches to them, Indians were viewed as hostile pests not as the actual owners and occupiers of the lands.

This story takes us through the incredible metamorphosis of a white US Army Officer, posted and promptly forgotten at the end of the known world, his interaction and eventual adoption by the local Indian tribe and the precipice of the Army once again occupying the fort and territory.

Wonderfully narrated. Kevi Costner must have truly loved this tale as he remained very loyal to the script in his movie of the same name.

When "The West" really was the last frontier.
