Publisher's Summary

Even as a young girl, Jill was a favorite of the magical, mysterious Wildfolk, who appeared to her from their invisible realm. Little did she know her extraordinary friends represented but a glimpse of a forgotten past and a fateful future. Four hundred years - and many lifetimes ago - one selfish young lord caused the death of two innocent lovers. Then and there he vowed never to rest until he'd righted that wrong - and laid the foundation for the lives of Jill and all those whom she would hold dear: her father, the mercenary soldier Cullyn; the exiled berserker Rhodry Maelwaedd; and the ancient and powerful herbman Nevyn, all bound in a struggle against darkness...and a quest to fulfill the destinies determined centuries ago.

Here in this newly revised edition is the incredible novel that began one of the best-loved fantasy series in recent years - a tale of bold adventure and timeless love, perilous battle, and pure magic. For long-standing fans of Deverry and those who have yet to experience this exciting series, Daggerspell is a rare and special treat.

Fantasy - at its very best!

Finally justice done. For those fantasy readers who are bored with the “story factory” fantasy books and series, this is the story for you. I would imagine that modern fantasy fiction authors like Sanderson and Martin would agree that Katharine Kerr would be part of the pioneer authors in this genre. Ruth Urquhart’s delivery of this classic novel is breathtakingly accurate. I highly recommend this book and the continuation of the series to anyone even remotely interested in Fantasy Fiction.

poor reading

Bad narrator unfortunately, ruins a great series. Voices used by the reader were very off-putting.

Massively underrated

One of my all time favourites of the genre. A perfect balance of historical fiction and epic fantasy. Very glad that Tantor has bought the rights to the first 4 books and that it is now available as an audiobook and on audible, it was a long time overdue. Highly recommended, once you start the series you will not be able to stop. If you enjoy the book I would suggest checking out the author's patreon page as there are pronunciation guides and context posted on there that really enhanced the experience for me!

All I Had Ever Hoped For!

This was my first foray into fiction audiobooks. This was also a book I've read a dozen times. The narration is excellent, and captures the dialect and accents that Kerr describes in her foreword to each Deverry novel with true storytelling grace. It made me feel like I did when I was a kid, and my mother would read her books to me. I was captivated. When I completed the book I felt like it had ended too soon. I wanted more, and I am happy that Darkspell is out now! May the whole Deverry Cycle come to this format.

Marvelous performance by Ms. Urquhart

I'm so happy that I discovered this book and to find that it is also a lengthy series. the writing is excellent and the concepts are such that I've never found in a fantasy story before. some of which is Celtic and some is not but it is a fascinating story nonetheless. also is a fan of the indie film Unicorn City I enjoyed discovering references in this book that were mentioned in the film (without credit).

I've been waiting 20 years for this

These were my favorite books when I was younger, and I loved them so much I read them onto tapes to make my own audio books. Listening to this narration of a book I practically know by heart was a bit of a revelation, and it felt like I was reading this beloved book again for the first time. Highly, highly recommend.

Again and again

I enjoyed the first two books moment by moment, but was often lost in the story thread. I do not regret repeated listening to figure the when and the who. Nonlinear I think is more difficult for a listener than a reader. Some epics are overwhelming by breadth. This one folds in on itself, so just pay attention. I feel the enjoyment worth the effort. I just wish I knew where the story is going.

Great read. Subtle fantasy with its own uniqueness

Characters are great. The unique way the story unfolds through the age is great. The take on the magic system is interesting though wish it bound itself to more rules.

Narration needs editing and review

I generally enjoyed the story, although it was rather straightforward as far as fantasy novels go. But I'm not much of a literary critic. The narration, however, left quite a lot to be desired. The narrator spoke clearly and had a good range of voices and emotional expression, however her pacing and cadence of speech needs serious review. The cadence and intonation/emphasis during characters' lines were often not correct for the ideas they were trying to express, which made it difficult to understand what was happening at times. In addition, there was virtually no pausing inbetween sentences and paragraphs regardless of context, which was often confusing. Two adjacent sentences could be completely separated in time, place, and character focus (likely part of different paragraphs) and have zero pause between them. This was often extremely jarring, especially if the first sentence of the following paragraph did not immediately establish a change in context. Audio narration needs a sufficient pause or appropriate intonation to signal a break between paragraphs, much like paragraphs have line breaks in text format. This may party be the fault of the narrator, but should absolutely have been addressed by an editor. The whole thing honestly felt like the narrator was being paid per word, and that retakes were being avoided like the plague. I would generally recommend this book, but not this audio rendition.

quality fantasy leaves you hooked

Great story and narration. The world & characters are ace. Addictive listen. I spend through this and can't wait to listen to the next one. Katherine's story isn't just 'womens fantasy'. The characters and sorry are for everyone. Recommend

Evocative, atmospheric fantasy

The story of Jill, a mercenary's daughter born to the dweomer (magic), opens the first book in the atmospheric Deverry series. but it isn't the start of the story. That begins in a past life 400 years earlier, when her lover abandons her to a dreadful fate. Nevyn the Dweomermaster lives on, bound by a vow that he won't rest until he has healed the souls he harmed as they are reincarnated over and over again. Daggerspell is a warm, muktilayered story that manages to blend emotional intelligence with great action sequences and rich world building.

Epic stories the way they're meant to be!

I first read this book back in 2003 and struggled to get to grips with it, but I'm so very glad I did. The first book is always the hardest to read, but this goes on to weave a fantastic tale of travel, magic, lost love and secrets. It seemlessly goes back and forth a 400 year time line around key figures and people they've known. Betrayal, lust, abandonment and sacrifice. The only thing I have had to come to grips with is the pronounceation of the reader in the way she says names and places, but to be fair I pronounced what I thought was right, so it'll sound different when someone else reads.. If you're a fan of fantasy fiction then this series, yes series of books is certainly one you should have in your collection... I have and I can wait for the rest of the collection to on Audible.. Enjoy!

One of my all time favourites on Audible!

The whole story draws you in almost from the beginning. The characters develop over many stories. Nevyn is such a fantastic idea. Living for hundreds of years to fix a problem he created. I can't wait for the other books to come. I bought the first four when I saw them become available. The narrator is a woman, I read these books with a male voice in my head. When I started listening, I was concerned that it wouldn't be as good but I have quickly come round to enjoying the narration. Everyone I recommended to these novels loved them, I recommend them now.
