Publisher's Summary

The second of Kate Skylark's co-created true child-abuse stories.

Steve Gilbert is a charming, clever man. Lucy is his 10-year-old daughter. Lucy loves him to bits, just as all little girls love their daddies, and she is delighted to hear he has organized a special party for her. After all, little girls love parties. But Steve Gilbert is also a sociopathic, manipulative sexual predator. Brainwashed into accepting her father’s twisted view of the world, Lucy trusts him implicitly. Daddy will keep her safe; he will keep her happy. Daddy would never betray his little girl, would he? But as time goes on, Steve Gilbert’s evil manipulations escalate, and following a shocking string of events, Lucy’s innocent young life turns from simple happy childhood to an abusive nightmare. Only one person can save her now.

Lucy Gilbert and Kate Skylark are friends and confidants. They created this book together to help raise money to help children in danger.

Warning: This book is based upon a true account of child abuse and, as such, contains passages that some listeners may find disturbing.

A Horrific Story, Well Written, Beautifully Read

It's never easy listening to these kinds of stories. What I love about this one is that it helps us to understand the experience through the eyes and mind of a confused child who innately loves her father. The psychological manipulation of abusers needs to be understood by those who have never experienced it. Well written. Beautifully read.

So sad but way too short and not enough detail.

Seems there could be a lot more detail. not looking for cruel details but there should be a lot more to this dark retelling.
poor kids.
I really wish these weren't true stories.

Heartbreaking

As heartbreaking as this story is, it's liberating for the writer to share her story and to see her life through her eyes!

Wicked and excruciating

Well written, well narrated, would recommend this to anyone who can stomach the story. So excruciating to hear the reality of what happened to her, but her bravery in telling the story is fantastic. And a great story to understand the true love and trust she put in her "dad" (I use that word loosely). The person that should be protecting her from some horrific actions and yet, grooming her for his wicked, disgusting fantasies. God bless u, young lady!!

So horrifying that this happens

Everyone knows that these things happen behind closed doors and it is horrifying that it does. Wished I could help all of these victims, there are so many we don’t know about. It’s heartbreaking that their own dad’s and mom’s are capable of doing this.

Why Did I Read This?

I just have always tried to wrap my head around this sort of thing but I just need to accept there will never be any way I can ever understand not only the behavior but why they dont give these men the death penalty because raping prepubescent children can kill them later on or lead to a horrible life of drugs and alcohol abuse so to me these men are akin to serial killers.

Brave

This was hard to listen due to my PTSD but finished this book and I love how the story ended. Lucy and her Mom are so brave. I'm glad Lucy was able to share this story.

it helped me alot it is quite sickening but also puts things in to perspective not for the faint of heart but a very good story about a shocking subject kind if hard to review really I get a few mixed feelings about it hard to hear but its helped me understand my own life helped me process some difficult things I sometimes get overwhelmed with feelings of protection for the girl in the story and slight anger just a rollercoaster of emotions but all in all its good

Hard to read but worth reading

Some reviews have said it is too graphic or reads like smut. I completely disagree. It is written in first person but this just makes it more emotionally authentic and helps you better understand how disgusted and horrified a child would feel. It also makes it very informative in regard to how a child would think if they were groomed. Overall I finished it feeling better equip to safeguard against child abuse and to talk to survivors/victims about it.

Not great.

Now I understand it is a true recollection of events and they are and can be very distressing I think that unfortunately in this case the book was poorly written. Just my opinion which I feel I can offer given that I do read books of this genre frequently. I have read others by the same author and enjoyed them so maybe for me this was just an “off” one.
