Nel romanzo, Marlowe racconta il suo viaggio, tra gli orrori del colonialismo, che culmina nell’incontro con l’enigmatico Kurtz. Francis Ford Coppola si è ispirato a questo romanzo per il film Apocalypse Now. "Cuore di tenebra è certo destinato, in primo luogo all’ascolto" scrive Maria Antonietta Saracino, che ha pensato questa traduzione "per assecondare il ritmo della voce che parla".
