Publisher's Summary

An hour after leaving home, on a normal December day, Sam Wren gets onto a tube train - and never gets off again. No eyewitnesses. No trace of him on security cameras.

Six months later, he's still missing. Out of options and desperate for answers, Sam's wife, Julia, hires missing-persons investigator David Raker to track him down. In missing-person cases, the only certainty is that everyone has something to hide.…

Gentle who dunnit

Would you consider the audio edition of Vanished to be better than the print version?

I really enjoyed this. I like who dunnit type stories but get really bored with the ever increasing violence that has to be described in gorey details. Fortunatley this is nothing of the sort. A who dunnit where although the 'crimes' are grim the descriptions are not overly grim, no nightmares with this but I wanted to know what happened.

Good detective story, but a bit predictable

This was entertaining enough, I enjoyed it overall, but I felt I was one step ahead of the game all the time. Not that keen on the narrator either, can't put my finger on it, but just found his voice difficult to warm to.

The evidence said I was wasting my time, except...

Would you try another book written by Tim Weaver or narrated by David Baukham?

Next time, unlike the main character, I will listen to the voice of reason and switch it off. Readers of this review will be unsure if the voice of reason, or the story, will get switched off. Readers of the book are faced with the same sort of problem several times a chapter.

Would you be willing to try another one of David Baukham’s performances?

If I want to listen to a story read by someone who sounds like Michael Portillo in the early stages of learning regional accents, I would be willing to try another performance by this reader.

A solid and rewarding listen

Tim Weavers last outing left me wanting more, and with Vanished I really felt more connected to the characters. Unanswered questions where answered the plot was simple but engaging. I would say it is a slow starter, but the idea keeps you wanting more. The story builds and builds to an incredible last hour which makes it so worth while. Having over 60 titles in my library this is right up there With the titles I will always remember. It is not too long and does not drag on at any point. A short sharp focused listen which I would recommend to anyone who is interested in the more dark side of humanity.

Not outstanding but entertaining

If you could sum up Vanished in three words, what would they be?

didn't Guess ending!

Would you be willing to try another book from Tim Weaver? Why or why not?

I probably wouldn't. I bought this to make up a buy one get one free offer so wasn't one I specifically chose.

It's good but not amongst the best thrillers I've read.

What does David Baukham bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

He's a great narrator. Good voices and engaging.

Most disgusting book I have listened to.

I love a good thriller but this book is quite horrible. I had to listen to the end to see if it had a good ending, but no it was terrible. Story is so violent. The reader is heavy and very difficult to listen to. I would like to return this book to audible. Not an enjoyable listen to at all and also difficult to follow the story.

Not worth it

Not an enjoyable listen. I stuck with it because I'd paid the money and like to listen in the car but it was constantly annoying, poorly written, bizarrely voiced and predictable. Not good.

A wasteland full of trivia

Would you try another book written by Tim Weaver or narrated by David Baukham?

definitely not

What will your next listen be?

I do not know yet

What didn’t you like about David Baukham’s performance?

I found his accent and intonation downright dull, no variety on tension or feeling I felt like drowning in banaltiy and blandness.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Utter boredom and anger that someone would waste my time like this. I kept on listening hoping the story would pick up and he would finally spare me details on tube stations but it went on and on. I had no choice but to put it down after the first part and I now will erase it from my memory forever.

Any additional comments?

Sorry but I'm really angry.

Confusing

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Narrative too confusing for an audiobook.

What could Tim Weaver have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

It would be better if the name of the main character was mentioned at the start of each of the earlier sections of the book.

Did David Baukham do a good job differentiating each of the characters? How?

Quite good. Male and female characters portrayed fairly well by lighter or deeper tone of voice.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Frustration in earlier chapters

disappointed

Being truthful I was trying to work out what was actually going on with this storyline. It just seemed like a load of waffle to me.
very disappointed to be quite honest. I found my mind wandering a lot whilst listening to it,just could not get to grips with it at all. Not what I expected, wasted money for me personally!
