Publisher's Summary

In this second installment of Carola Dunn's cozy mystery series set in 1923 England, plucky Daisy Dalrymple embarks on another assignment for Town and Country magazine and discovers that daffodil bulbs aren't all that's buried in a country estate's flower bed.

Feisty flapper Dalrymple is a breath of fresh air to the occupants of gloomy Occles Hall in Cheshire, among them her former school chum, wallflower Bobbie Parslow, and the thorny mistress of the manor, Lady Valeria. While photographing the barren ground behind the house, Daisy suspects someone has been digging amidst the soil's first green shoots, and promptly unearths the corpse of Grace Moss, the missing parlor maid. So begins a harrowing romp as the dead woman's shocking secret is revealed.

Critic Reviews

"Set in a British manor house in 1923, this traditional charmer will please most everyone." (Library Journal)
"Manners (P.G. Wodehouse-style) and mystery get equal time in a low-keyed story with considerable charm." (Kirkus Reviews)

Engaging characters, distracting narration

The story was quite engaging and reasonably well written – the narrator was terrific in terms of having different voices for different characters, but the story was delivered in an uneven transatlantic accent. Normally this wouldn’t matter, but the setting was Woodhousian England, so the overall effect was rather distracting.

Good story

Unfortunately the narration by an American trying to imitate a British accent was once again very annoying. It took me a while to realise that Barbie was actually Bobby !!!!

A likeable heroine

This is an entertaining read if you're after a murder mystery with interesting characters, but without much action.
Bernadette Dunne has a pleasant voice as narrator, however her accent to my ears has the sound of someone who may have started off in Britain but has spent a lot of time living in America, and now has American twangs in the way certain words are pronounced, which I found jarred me out of the story now and then. Not sure if that's it, but that's how it sounded to me. Apart from that, I enjoyed her narration.
As far as murder mysteries go, the story has Agatha Christie vibes that I quite like; not too heavy, not too dark. If there is such a thing as a 'light' murder mystery then I guess this is it. And for what I wanted to listen to at the time, that was just fine.
The settings, time period and characters feel well researched and thought through, and I'll definitely listen to more in the series.

Not a good narrater

The story was excellent with twists and turns keeping the reader guessing. The narrater was not good. Her pronunciation of simple words was appalling. It rather spoilt the story for me.

love the storyline

hate the narration - the mispronunciation of words. placenames, and slips in accent really take away from the book. I end up listening to the accent instead of getting immersed in the story. One out of many examples -one of the main characters is called Sebastian - which becomes Seb-arse-tian for the entire book. I want to continue the series - it seems fun and engaging but.... I'm really not sure I can.

Enjoyable

Just as entertaining as the first book. Has a sweet comforting kind of style compared to other mystery books. Nice to have a few of the same characters continuing the story.

Best cosy mystery I've heard in ages

Really good writing. A likeable heroine set with fabulous phrases and characters of the era. Lovely narration.
